Internet marketing-- Yes, we are measurable!

Two interesting articles in respected publications indicate a promising future for Online Advertisement.

While one article covers the advantages, history and predictably the future of Online Marketing, the other warns of the impending imbalance in supply versus demand, where demand will outstrip supply sooner than we think. I have a mixed reaction to this, as it seems to be good news and bad news, Hmmm I wonder...

Mckinsey Quarterly

Internet advertising has recaptured the imagination of marketers.

Yet recent McKinsey research finds that supply bottlenecks could limit the pace of online ad growth and drive prices higher.

Moreover, a dearth of ad agencies that can manage both traditional and digital campaigns could further slow the shift in spending to online ads.

Over time, inventory levels will increase, and marketers will be able to shift larger portions of their budgets online. Until then, marketers will have to manage a broad and rapidly changing array of media vehicles.

This article at FT caught my eye, and it talks about Google fast becoming a favorite with Management Graduates as well, and how they are looking beyond consultancy and banking firms.

This is surprising for Google where traditionally it has been getting the best tech talent, whether from other companies or fresh graduates.

Lets see if the trend is seen here in India as well, where Google = IT holds true.

I found this interesting video on Youtube that talks about Adwords Abuse and how its increased in the last quarter. Worth a watch and here's some text from the site:

"There has been a recent explosion in abuse of AdWords, Google's PPC (pay per click) advertising platform. It is apparent that the techniques do not follow Google's own clear guidelines. Unfortunately, users and legitimate advertisers pay the price, while Google and the unscrupulous advertisers profit.

Is Google going to take Over the world?

I talked about this a long time back here .

Now a leading publication online has come out with an article titled : Can Google Take Over the World?

It talks about how G is growing and the stock is set to go sky high....etc.

Anyways what’s of interest is this article that caught my eye: Rumors Mount over Google's Internet Plan.

It talks about how Google is planning to have its own Internet.

a) They are buying tons of dark fibre
b) Buyout of Telecom Equipment
c) Acquiring Shipping containers to develop processing grids-- "The idea is to plant one of these puppies anywhere Google owns access to fiber, basically turning the entire Internet into a giant processing and storage grid"
d) Developing Cheaper ways to get online(Mountainveiw has Free Wireless N/W). Under $100 PC's are almost here.

But these may just be rumors. After all Google is the biggest source of rumors. Remember Sun Google partnership on how Open Office would be MS Office Killer. All we got was a Google toolbar with a JVM.

Or how a new operating system turned out to be a not so sharp Google pack.

I Love This Hype. It's so addictive reading all these rumors !

Google Killer "Jab"

Well, the name of the game seems to be interoperatibility.

It all started when Google launched GTalk earlier this year based on open source protocols- Jabber/XMMP.

Then came the announcement in October that Yahoo and MSN messengers would soon be interoperable.

Today I just heard that Google Talk is going to be interoperable with All XMMP/Jabber clients.

Well there are tools already that allow you a one stop access to all major messengers.

Tools like Trellian and Meebo are already allowing users to access all the messengers but it would be great when only one login would put you in touch with all your buddies across different messengers.

And by that I mean not just allow everyone to talk to each other, but let each other use voice , photo sharing and all other VAS (if i may call them).

This step by G seems to a great one step in that direction.

But until that happens, (advertising revenues and how they would be sharedremains to be seen) i am happier using trillian and meebo.com.

And what about Ebay owned Skype and Yahoo Owned Dialpad?

New Year to Arrive Late

That means this year the countdown must go 3 - 2 - 1-1 ...Happy New Year!

All this is to ensure that the clocks stay in sync with the rotation of the earth which is slowing down or may speed up according to great upheavels on the planet, earthquakes and tsunamis included. Also, its rotatiom is being slowed down by the gravitational pull of the moon. Here's some more interesting facts.

-Since 1967 a second has been defined by the vibration of the caesium-133 atom. One second equals 9,192,631,770 periods of the chosen vibration
-Although this was chosen to be as near as possible to Earth seconds, the Earth’s rotation is not as regular as the caesium atom
-Since 1972 22 leap seconds have been introduced, usually at midnight on December 31 but sometimes at the end of June
-If the rotation of the Earth accelerated — because of changes in fluid circulation in the core, for example — a second would be subtracted
-This possibility is hinted at by the long wait since the last leap second, in 1999
-Without correction, in 1,000 years the estimated difference would be an hour

So syncronize your watches guys, and wait that extra second before you wish someone.

Move over Statcounter.com, Haveamint.com, MeasureMap, Blogbeat, WSS HBX, NetIQ , WebTrends, Core Metrics, Click Tracks, Omniture SiteCatalyst......Urchin is now free.

This was the best Monday morning news ever for the Analytics industry. I guess this will go a long way in promoting Web Analytics and better highlighting the importance of measurement for the Online Industry and how measuring results can positively impact the ROI. Measurable results always leads to better and informed decisions.

According to http://www.blogger.com/www.google.com/analytics, “You’ll be able to compare the behavior and profitability of visitors who were referred from each of your ads, keywords, search engines, and emails, and gain valuable insight into how to improve your site's content and design.."

The setup is easy, and reporting is exhaustive. I especially like the three different views for Executives, Marketers and Webmasters.

This is great news for SME's with a limited monthly marketing budget. Integration with Adwords has finally completed the picture and active monitoring can go a long way in impacting the bottomline.

It’s up to the Analytics community to talk about how this "free" tool can be best utilized by everyone. Let’s help spread the word.

Jagger Hungama

Except for people in the SEM community, "Jagger" has no more connotations than the Rolling Stones. However it seems to be the new cause for sleepless nights.

Google had started updating its algorithm yet again, and it has been nicknamed " Jagger" this time . Seems its happening in three stages and runs from Mid September to Mid November. The Google algorithm apparently still needs constant tweaking to ensure there are no hacks and to stay ahead of improvised positions on SERP's. There's also talks of Google using Pre-Christmas time to hike Adwords spending for people losing rankings. Thats the SEM folks crying foul.

A google engineer's (Matt Cutts) blog seems to have jumped manifold in popularity for "revealing' activity on the Google DC's vis-a-vis the updates. Check out the jump in his blog's popularity in the recent past.

Alternate Ways to Search The Web

Traditional search engines are numerous and for a complete list visit the link at searchenginewatch.

Newer ways to search the web include clustering results and adding vital information to the search results.

I find the following three the most interesting:

1. Mooter

The retrieved results are filtered and grouped into visually arranged semantic clusters according to their context. I think its a great way to learn about any topic, viz here, Sigur Ros, a band out Of Iceland.

2.Clusty

Similar to mooter, it offers multiple search options like web, news, images, shopping, wikipedia, and my favorite-blogs.

But thats not it, it even lets you customize what you want to search for. And the results are always clustered. A great way to search and the way to the future.

3. Mozbot

Extracts results only in English from google, but adds information like definition, related words, search statistics, page thumbnails etc. Very handy, especially with the SEM community. Find out all the additions on the mozbot website.

Or search from 10Hz.

And for the way things are goings well, we probably will go from horizontal search(anything and everything) to vertical search(more specific) with local search becoming a part of our lives.

Its available at OpenOffice.org as a bit torrent and CDRom's you can order.

I have, after months of random postings on multiple blogs, decided to streamline (for lack of a better word) my findings on the Internet.

I chose "10 Hz" because at 10 Hz you dont hear it , but fell it and fear it. The human mind has been hardwired from ancient times to be scared of thunder and crashes of lightening.
